The paper discusses the issues of a specific type of youth tourism - travel combined with voluntary work for the visited environment, referred to as workcamps. This study is the product of the author's interests and her several years' experience in short-term voluntary work. In summer 2002, she carried out surveys among the former volunteers from Poland and other countries, the findings from which are presented in this paper. The surveys indicate that workcamps satisfy che criteria associated with the educational role of tourism. Their participants have opportunities for becoming familiar with the visited country, its natural and cultural assets and its citizens. Owing to being members of an international group, they can also learn about other cultures and hone their language skills. The workcamps also help promote other, broader values, such as tolerance, friendship, group cooperntion; they also stimulate self-education processes. As one of Polish participants put it, "at a work-camp, you can learn a lot and gain a lot".
