After the September Defeat in 1939 some Polish units were evacuated to the South of Europe and later on moved to the West. In those camps, for example in Hungary and in Romiania, most soldiers (among whom there were many sportsmen) spent much time on physical activities to stay fit. Mainly they used to practise morning gymnastics and marches around the place of their lodging. After further evacuation, mainly to France, Polish units fought on different fronts together with the Allied forces, for example, in Norway. Later they dispersed in other countries — some units stayed in France and Switzerland, other units moved on to palestine and then to Egypt. However on every front, Polish soldiers in their free time paid much attention to physical fitness, and many of them actively practised different sport events. The also had many successes in competitions, especially in skiing (in the Alpine countries) and in football (of the Near East).
