The study is concerned with the lake Smreczyński Staw situated in the upper zone of the Kościeliska Valley in the area of the median moraine which was formed by two lateral moraines of the Würm glaciers flowing from the Pysznanska and Tomanowa Valleys, and is situated at the junction of those valleys. The palynologic analyses made and interpretation of the results obtained made it possible to establish the age of the lake Smreczyński Staw as about 8000 years B.P. The lake was created in the second half of the Boreal period as a result of melting down of the dead ice block occurring under the last glaciation morainic formation. On the basis of the analysis for the organic matter content in the lake bed of the lake Smreczynski Staw, and on the grounds of an analysis of physicogeographic conditions it may be concluded that the major supply of material to the lake was due to the organic detritus originating from the organisms living in water and in the immediate neighbourhood of the lake. Comparison of the results of analysis of the organic matter content and those of the pollen analysis makes it possible to distinguish a drier period in the lake Smreczyński Staw history occurring in the early Atlantic period. It was also found on the same basis that since the formation of the lake Staw Smreczynski till now at least four periods of rising and falling of the upper forest limit in the Kościeliska Valley took place.
