The author presents a comparison of chosen social and economic effects during the transformation period, pointing out the administrative structure of both countries. One of the objectives of the comparison was to adjust the Ukrainian data at the regional level to the Polish ones in order to make them representative. The aim of the paper is to show the situation of these two countries in Europe in terms of social and economic development which started at the beginning of the 1990s. The author has introduced a term and formula of Extreme Rate of Differentiation (ERD) so as to show the levels of regional differentiation (NUTS 2) within the country (NUTS 1)1 and implemented the amplitude index.

W artykule zaprezentowano zróżnicowania inter-regionalne i internacjonalne wybranych parametrów ekonomicznych. Wyróżniono zróżnicowanie poziomów, dynamiki i kosztów rozwoju regionów (NUTS 2) na przykładzie Polski i Ukrainy. Do mierzenia zróżnicowania — dla oceny poziomów polaryzacji rozwoju regionów na tle całego państwa - wprowadzono tzw. skrajną stopę zróżnicowania (ERD).
