Do najważniejszych cech gór należą znaczne wysokości względne i bezwzględne, z którymi związana jest piętrowość klimatu i geoekosystemów oraz odprowadzanie nadwyżek wody i substancji mineralnych poza obręb gór. Autor omawia kolejno zasoby wodne, glebowe, roślinne i inne, ich eksploatację i związaną z tym degradację środowiska. Racjonalne gospodarowanie zasobami w górach staje się postulatem podstawowym w sytuacji eksplozji demograficznej i globalnego ocieplenia.

Among the specific features of mountain areas are their great relative hights and hights above sea level, which control the vertical zonality of climate and geoecosystems. High rainfalls and steep slopes cause an outflow of surplus of water and mineral matter from the mountains to submontane depressions. The mountain geosystems show great variety of types and areal pattern. Mountain ranges contain various natural resources starting from stored and flowing water, soils, vegetation (forest and grassland), minerals and landscape - touristic resources. Their exploitation cause an acceleration in the circulation of water and matter, extensive soil erosion and pollution of air, water, soils and biotic components. Therefore it arrise the postulate of rational management and sustainable development of mountain areas, especially in the conditions of demographic explosion, global warming and increased frequency of extreme events like heavy downpours, floods etc.
