The aim of the study was to characterize Scottish Highland cattle. Scotch Highland cattle are the oldest existing breed of cattle, which was developed in extremely difficult environmental condition where only the strongest animals could survive. Highland cattle are characterized by many valuable traits, such as resistance to harsh conditions and diseases, efficient feed utilization, as well as good fertility. Thanks to those features Scotch Highland cattle are developed all over the world; nevertheless the total word population is small, counting 28 000 units. Despite the fact that the quality of its meat is unquestionable, in Europe Highland cattle are mainly used in agro tourism farms and for landscape management. Presently, when breed diversity is an issue, Highland cattle should find a place in the Polish agriculture landscape.
