Excursions are the basic form of tourist and sightseeing activity in schools. They are organised primarily with a view to providing opportunities for learning more about the natural environment of the home country and its historical heritage, to promoting patriotic and aesthetic feelings, as well as generating cognitive and emotional activity among the school students. They are also aimed to satisfy the recreational and health needs of children and young people. The destinations and geographical directions of schools excursions were studied on the basis of trips lasting at least two days and organised in the 2000/2001 and 2001/2002 school years for the students of 84 secondary schools in Warsaw. The available analyses demonstrate that excursions organised by middle schools (gimnazja) do not comprise the entire territory of Poland. Most of middle school students take part in trips to the mountains, while trips to the western and eastern parts of the country are very rare. In consequence, frequently such students may go to the mountains at least three times, while coastal, lake and upland landscapes will remain unknown to them. This is an undesirable phenomenon if we want the students during their school education to become familiar with the diverse landscapes of Poland. One of the solutions to address this problem is to elaborate a set of excursion schemes, which would take into consideration the location of schools and the education level of the students. According to the national curriculum, trips in primary schools might cover the region where the particular school is located, and the surrounding regions; in middle schools - the further situated regions, and in secondary schools (licea), the most remote regions. The proposals of excursion schemes should be consistent with the curricula for specific subjects for given education levels.
