During the central-plan system the agriculture was determined by production cooperatives except for Poland, where the agricultural sectoral structure was unique with the domination of small farms. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the changing role of CEECs' farm structures in production and to find the reasons for the economic viability and survivability of cooperatives by countries in various rates. In details the paper examines: production cooperative restructuring, new cooperatives, the policy influence on the development of cooperatives, the role of total factor productivity in competitiveness of production cooperatives and the relationship between changes and social factors.
