The introduction of market economy after 1989 changed the situation on the labour market contributing to the coming into existence a category of people - unemployed. The difficult situation on the labour market in the whole economy has its reflection also in the rural areas of the Kujawsko-Pomorskie voivodship, where the unemployment level was higher than the average for the whole country (see Table 1). In all of the districts in the Province (except the Aleksandów district) an increase in the unemployment was observed in comparison to the value in 2000 in rural areas (see Fig. 1, 2). The mean value in the Province grew from 14,0% to 15,7% (see Table 2). In 2001 in the Kujawsko-Pomorskie voivodship women make 52,9% of unemployed in the country, by 2% less than a year before (54,9%). In rural areas first of all young people are unemployed (see Fig. 3). They have on the average lower education level than unemployed in towns. Over 40% of people being out of work in rural areas have elementary and incomplete education (see Fig. 4). As much as 54% of the unemployed remained without work longer than 12 months (see Fig. 5). The analysis of unemployment in the country, examined from the point of view of the period of service showed that 26% of people out of work have no professional experience at all.
