Professional burnout syndrome is most often observed in the professions whose characteristic feature is a strong interaction with another human being, described as “human services” (i.e. doctors, nurses, teachers). The costs of this strong interaction may be extremely high for the employee. Despite the fact that social and situational factors are the main reasons for the burnout occurrence, the role of individual treatments should not be ignored. The aim of the study was to present the results of research on the relation between temperament of employees and professional burnout syndrome. The participants were Polish psychotherapists (n=64, 86% women). The temperament traits were measured with The Formal Characteristic of Behaviour - Temperament Inventory (FCB-IT) by Strelau and Zawadzki and a Polish adaptation of the 4th version of the Sensation Seeking Scale by Zuckerman; the professional burnout syndrome was measured with a Polish adaptation of the Maslach Burnout Inventory. A relation between temperament and professional burnout was proved. Temperament traits responsible for Iow abilities of stimulation processing (high perseverance and emotional reactivity, Iow tendency to sensation seeking, Iow briskness, endurance and activity) were recognized as risk factors of burnout syndrome. The results of the research suggest that psychotherapists with specific temperamental characteristics should concentrate on prevention more than others.
