The article presents the results of survey research on conditionings of socioeconomic development as perceived by local dwellers. The studies were conducted in a sample commune located close to a city agglomeration and possessing high environmental values. Such areas have a developmental potential and it may be expected that investment potential producing measurable economic and social results would be located just there. However, no development could be expected without the cooperation and internal integration of the local communities. Conducted studies demonstrated that rural dwellers begin to perceive and appreciate the importance of their own activities in solving common problems. Moreover, they increasingly attach importance to protection of the natural environment. Such attitudes make possible harmonious cooperation of all subjects in a given area, which conditions common success.
