Stereotyp oznacza uproszczone, niepoddające się weryfikacji spostrzeganie rzeczywistości. Stereotypy dotyczące osób upośledzonych dotyczą często przekonania o ich agresywności, nieprzewidywalności, braku odpowiedzialności, chorobie psychicznej. Ograniczenie negatywnych stereotypów dotyczących osób upośledzonych umysłowo wiąże się nierozerwalnie z poprawą egzystencji tych osób. Bardziej niż upośledzenie stygmatyzacja społeczna zamyka drogę osobom upośledzonym umysłowo do społecznej integracji.

Stereotypes are fixed impressions, preconceived and exaggerated ideas about particular social groups; overgeneralizations that do not represent all, or perhaps even most individuals within a group. Stereotypes are mostly learned at a young age, and they remain unchallenged, untested and confused with reality. There are many stereotypes of mentally handicapped. Most obviously is the thought that they are aggressive, unpredictable, irresponsible and mentally ill. The reason being that we should reverse negative stereotypes, is a life improvement for those people. Even more than being disabled, the social censure circumscribes the integration opportunities for mentally handicapped.
