Over the two centuries of its publishing activity, ‘Sylwan’ has published 13.5 thousand bibliographic items on over 110,000 pages from all fields of forestry and related sciences, as well as practical forestry. Of that amount, about 1,500 papers concerned nature conservation in forests. Initially, in the 19th century, descriptions and inventory results of forest resources, valuable natural areas, objects and endangered species were rather scarce. Later, from the beginning of the 20th century, the published papers initiated the establishment of nature reserves and national parks, discussed their organization and methods of protective activities, including protection of monument trees and some rare animal species. Most publications concerned large−scale nature protection in large forest complexes, vast areas of mountain ranges, different natural−forest regions and districts, discussing various issues, such as botanical, phytosociological, dendrological, mycological, zoological, entomological, pedological, hydrological, as well as tourism, nature and forest education for the benefit of nature and people. The majority of papers included considerations on the ideological foundations of nature conservation from the point of view of the philosophy of nature, ethics, ecology, sociology, economics and other fields of science. The earliest papers informed about individual natural objects, while in recent years they have dealt with the conservation of biodiversity as such, protection of the Natura 2000 network and promoted multifunctional, sustainable forest management as a modern form of nature protection in forests. This is the oldest forest scientific journal in the world since 1820, having an impact on the promotion of the idea and principles of nature conservation, creating and improving the network of the most valuable natural areas and objects in Poland.
