In spite of administrative work in the State Meteorological Institute, didactic work and the period of war, prof Romuald Gumiński had a significant scientific output. A complete list of his published works (53 items) has been published by assistant professor Zofia Kaczorowska in Obituary Notice („Przegląd Geograficzny” vol. XXV, Nr 1, 1953). The list shows a wide range of works, it contains: popular notices, articles, dissertations, academic manuals. Among the works concerning Poland Materiały do poznania genezy i struktury klimatu Polski („Przegląd Geograficzny” vol. XXIV, Nr 3, 1952 deserves particular attention. The author introduced a new studies - dynamie climatology and showed how to apply its methods on the example of Poland. The work entitles us to claim that R. Gumuński is a precursor in scientific description of dynamie climate features in Poland. Gumiński claimed that life and science work and practice should be combined by introducing applied climatology methods. He deserves credit for establishing in State Meteorological Institute, Agrometeorology Department (after the war changed into agro-forestal climatology department), and knowledge popularization on this subject which can be seen in numerous publications. Among His works: Próba wydzielenia dzielnic rolniczo-klimatycznych w Polsce („Przegl. Meteorol. i Hydrol.” Nr 1, 1948), Grad, jego pochodzenie i walka z nim („Prace Państw. Inst. Meteorol.” Nr 1, 1930) are the best known, most often cited in literature and highly estimated of all. Gumiński's publications often concerned new trends in climatology. A controversial article 35-letnie okresy wahań klimatycznych Brücknera w świetle klimatologii dzisiejszej („Wiad. Służby Hydrol. i Meteorol.” Nr 4, 1949) is the best example of it. Particularly interesting are descriptions concerning extreme atmospheric phenomena and their negative consequences. Main scientific problems initiated by Gumiński have been continued by the Climatology Department of Warsaw University, and Poland is the most important research subject. It is shown by main research trends realized, after prof Gumiński's death, by his succcssors. Structure and regionalization of climate in Poland, are the main research problems solved by prof Wincenty Okołowicz with the great help of prof. Zofia Kaczorowska. Now the subject of Natural and Antropogenie Climate Changes in Poland is being researched. On the occasion of Centenary of prof. Gumiński's birthday, Department of Climatology staff pays homage and gratitude for significant contribution in climatology development, for wide scope of interest inspiring young geographers to conduct research and write their own scientific descriptions.
