In three experiments, the effect of simple rations and the system of feeding on body weight gain and the quality of wool in 112, 180, 180 young ewes of 11-13 month old has been compared. Supplements of high energy and high protein content have been added to the diets including hay and preserved or non preserved grass silage. In the first experiment it resulted in significantly lower body gain in sheep fed roughages using simplified feeding system /13 g compared with 67.5 and 59,5 g when using standard system/. In the second experiment, body gain was higher by 10 g when sheep were fed oil meal supplement compared to 50 body gain in the groups fed oat or barley supplement. Higher body weight gain /50 g/ in sheep fed grass silage preserved with sodium formate was observed in the third experiment compared with the sheep fed hay or hay supplemented with nonpreserved silage /43 g / . It has been found that feeding double amount of hay or silage by turns every two days /simplified system/ may result In the decrease in body gain and the supplement of concentrates to the diet containing hay or silage may not be high. Protein concentrate supplement does not provide significant economic effects. Grass silage preserved with sodium formate provides higher quality feed and higher body weight gain. No significant effects of the experimental faotors on wool quality have been shown.
