Intensive environmental contamination by chemicals caused by human activities makes the monitoring of biological systems response necessary. It is difficult to predict the eff ects of pollutants basing only on measuring their concentrations in the abiotic environment. Toxic eff ects of pollutant are determined by its bioavailability for the accumulation in the body. Measurement of bioconcentration of pollutants in organisms is one of the types of biomonitoring. This allows the tracking the distribution of pollutants in the environment, not only allowing the assessment of environmental pollution, but also the real threat posed by these pollutants for the organisms living in this environment. Monitoring of bioconcentration of pollutant in conjunction with the analysis of their physiological effects and trophic relationships in ecosystems allows the prediction of ecological effects of pollution.
