Aerosol immunization of swine against red fever by means of VR2 vaccine

One hundred and eighty pigs, divided into three groups, were exposed to aerosol immunization with VR2 vaccine or were vaccinated subcutaneously; the third group served as a control. The immune response of the immunized animals was tested serologically; in addition, some animals were challenged with a suspension of Erysipelotrix rhusiopathiae (1 :100 dilu­tion of broth culture) given intradermally. In the majority of vaccinated pigs there were found specific antibodies whose titers were rising from three weeks after vaccination up to 4 months. The biological test performed on 5 pigs of each group after 3 weeks, 2 and 4 months resulted in generalised swine erysi­pelas in all control animals. In the group vaccinated subcutaneously two animals showed clinical signs of the disease, and in the group immunized by aerosol one animal got ill after 3 weeks since vaccination. After 2 and 4 months since vaccination no animal vaccinated subcutaneously or by aerosol showed any signs of the disease. It was proved that immuniza­tion of pigs with Vaccina VR2 given in the form of aerosol resulted in a good immune response in pigs.
