The main aim of the study is to present and justify, using detailed maps, the boundary line of a selected physico-geographical valley mesoregion located within the Toruń-Eberswalde ice-marginal valley. The Toruń Basin (315.35-36) is analysed in detail. The procedures for carrying out landscape audits as well as all planning related work require standardization and a set of principles for delimiting boundaries, particularly in physico-geographical mesoregions. In the Toruń-Eberswalde ice-marginal valley, many different regional divisions have been proposed. The latest was performed by the author in 2014-2015 in the course of creating an online atlas for the Kujawsko-Pomorskie voivodeship. More recently, the physico-geographical regionalization of a selected part of the voivodship, as well as for the Toruń-Eberswalde ice-marginal valley, has been elaborated and verified. In delimiting and verifying the physico-geographical regions a deductive approach and leading factor method was adopted. Earlier work on classifying lowland areas brought to light certain difficulties in determining the course of physico-geographical regional boundaries within the valley (figs 1, 2). The study emphasizes that relief is one of the most important criteria in delimiting physico-geographical regions, including mesoregions. It also refers to the very definition of valleys commonly used in geomorphology. A valley is a depression of varying origins, featuring a floor and sides. River valley sides may be more or less diversified. The method of delimiting the boundaries of regions within the valley is discussed using the example of the Toruń Basin (315.35-36) mesoregion. The side of the valley or basin forms a part of the valley mesoregion, and its boundary is clearly delimited by the edge (figs 3a, 3b, 4a). In places where the valley is joined by subglacial channels or valleys of greater or lesser size, the boundary of the mesoregion is determined by the characteristic narrowing of the channel or valley mouth (figs 3a, 3b, 3c, 4a, 4b, 4c ). Subglacial channels or valleys joining the Toruń Basin either belong to neighbouring mesoregions (e.g. moraine plateau), or different regions of various grade. In areas of dunes and windblown sands which extend beyond the valley into moraine plateaus, the borders of the mesoregion should be delimited according to the relief (the line of the valley edge), as well as lithology (the extent of the presence of tills) (fig. 4c). The solutions presented may provide an important guide to delimiting boundaries not only in physico-geographical mesoregions, but equally in other regions of varying grade.
