Teratology is an interdisciplinary field of science dealing with the causes and consequences of abnormal development. The birth of modern teratology dates to the years 1921-1935, when the empirically proven relationship between the reduced supply of vitamin A in the feed, mothers, and the occurrence anopia and microphthalmia in piglets. Milestone in the history of teratology, however, was a thalidomidide tragedy (1957 - 1962), when the result of taking thalidomide during pregnancy - a potentially nontoxic sedative drug - was born about seven thousand guests. Since that time, conducted research on the adverse effects of various pharmacological agents on human prenatal development. The following article contains the current state of knowledge in this area, with particular emphasis on teratogenic factors, together with a possible mechanism for the formation of complex pathology.
